A renewable energy device in Wales has received a £1.4 million funding boost from the EU.

The tidal power generator, which uses DeltaStream technology, is the first of its kind in Wales.

A 12-month trial will be launched using the funding in order to assess the suitability of a site in west Wales.

Jane Davidson, the country's environment minister, commented: "I am delighted that this innovative offshore project will be the first of its kind in Wales, demonstrating how Wales can lead the way in our commitment to produce clean, renewable energy for the benefit of our communities and, in turn, tackle climate change."

Tidal Energy Ltd, the company behind the technology, is to begin conducting environmental assessments at the proposed demonstration site at Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire.

Following the tests, a full-scale prototype device is expected to be deployed in 2011.
